Megan Keating

Megan attended Dublin City University, where she studied Children�s and General Nursing (integrated) BSc. Shortly after qualifying, she moved from Dublin to London to begin her career in nursing on the Metabolic and Endocrine ward in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), nursing acute inpatients admitted for critical treatment. Megan progressed to Senior staff nurse, gaining management experience as the nurse in charge of the ward and supporting junior staff members. Following this, Megan became a nurse specialist in the metabolic team at GOSH, which allowed her to gain expertise with children and young adults with Lysosomal Storage Disorders and Batten's Disease. Megan continues in this role, co-managing the caseload of over 200 patients with various inherited Metabolic conditions and complex needs. Megan progressed to a more senior role as a clinical nurse specialist, allowing her to take on a more executive position in running the highly specialised service and completing various research projects. Her roles and responsibilities include advising and guiding parents and patients from diagnosis throughout the disease journey and making clinical decisions to ensure safe administration of specialist treatment in hospitals and at home. Megan takes pride in advocating for patients with rare diseases and feels this is crucial to her role. Megan has been instrumental in ensuring she maintains best practice by providing poster publications to international symposiums such as WORLD. She has also presented at nurse education meetings, speaking to colleagues from other centres and home care organisations.
