BEATTIE, MARK

Professor Mark Beattie is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at University Hospital Southampton, where he leads the Wessex Regional Paediatric Gastroenterology service. He specializes in nutritional management of chronic diseases, with a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). His contributions to pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition, and medical education have shaped clinical practice and research in the field.

Prof. Beattie has published extensively on pediatric digestive health, authoring multiple revision texts and co-editing the Oxford Handbook of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, now in its second edition. His research explores the etiology and management of chronic gastrointestinal diseases, integrating genetic studies, nutritional interventions, and clinical trials to refine treatment strategies for children with IBD.

He has played a key role in professional leadership, serving as President of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) from 2010 to 2013. His work within BSPGHAN has contributed to national guidelines on pediatric digestive disorders, ensuring that healthcare professionals follow evidence-based protocols to improve patient outcomes.

Prof. Beattie is actively involved in academic publishing, serving as Editor-in-Chief of Frontline Gastroenterology (since 2018) and BMJ Open Gastroenterology (since 2020). He also holds an honorary professorship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, mentoring healthcare professionals and researchers in advanced digestive health studies.

Beyond his research and clinical work, Prof. Beattie leads the Southampton Paediatric IBD Genetics Research team, investigating genetic markers and personalized treatment approaches for children with inflammatory bowel disease. His contributions to pediatric gastroenterology, nutritional science, and medical education continue to shape the field, improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies for children with complex gastrointestinal conditions.
