Why Healthy Aging Matters
Population aging is accelerating worldwide, placing growing demands on health and social systems. Healthy aging extends beyond longevity to physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being across the life course. A prevention-focused approach supports independence, functional ability, and quality of life in later years, while reducing avoidable healthcare use and long-term system pressures.
Why Longevity Outpaces Health
Health systems remain oriented toward treating disease rather than sustaining health, and prevention is too often introduced only after problems emerge rather than built in from the start. As populations live longer, the challenge is no longer extending life, but ensuring those years are lived well.
From Evidence to Implementation
Meeting these challenges requires a shift from reactive care to proactive, life-course prevention. This work spans reducing chronic and age-related disease risk, promoting nutrition, activity, and mental health, building age-friendly health systems and integrated care, and shaping policies that support independence and well-being in older adulthood.
