Dr. Richard Reading is a consultant in community paediatrics based in Norwich, United Kingdom, with clinical and academic interests in child abuse, safeguarding, and the epidemiology of rare pediatric conditions. He holds a concurrent academic appointment as a Reader at Norwich Medical School, where he is involved in teaching and research in child health and community paediatrics.
His research focuses on a range of areas including rare disease epidemiology, child maltreatment, the epidemiology of emotional and psychiatric disorders in children, accident prevention, and service evaluation. He has been involved in projects that examine both the clinical and public health dimensions of pediatric care, particularly in community and vulnerable populations.
Dr. Reading has been an active member of the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU) since 2006. He served on the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Surveillance System from 2007 to 2013 and has chaired the BPSU Scientific Committee since 2013. Through these roles, he has contributed to national surveillance studies and supported the development of research methodologies aimed at improving the detection and understanding of rare pediatric conditions.
He also contributes to the UK’s Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme, where he supports the evaluation of clinical and cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions, with a particular focus on child health services.
Dr. Reading continues to play a key role in advancing the fields of community paediatrics and pediatric epidemiology through clinical practice, research, and national advisory roles.
