Dr. Natalie Mazur is a clinician-investigator specializing in pediatric infectious diseases and immunology at Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht, Netherlands. Her research focuses on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and maternal vaccination, aiming to develop accessible and effective vaccines for vulnerable populations.
Mazur’s academic journey began with a biology degree at Harvard University, where she cultivated a passion for translational research. She later worked at Massachusetts General Hospital, researching pediatric respiratory emergencies. Her interest in global health led her to pursue postgraduate studies at UMC Utrecht, where she trained as a clinician scientist with a focus on infectious diseases.
Her research on RSV has been widely recognized, particularly her contributions to the RSV vaccine landscape. She has collaborated with leading experts, including Shabir Madhi at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and Louis Bont at Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, to advance vaccine development strategies. Her PhD research advocated for a poorest-first approach to RSV vaccine distribution, emphasizing the need for equitable access in low-income regions.
Mazur has also gained hands-on experience in global health settings, completing a medical internship at a missionary hospital in rural Malawi. There, she managed cases of malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and respiratory infections, deepening her understanding of healthcare challenges in resource-limited environments.
Currently, Mazur is working in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish conditions for an affordable RSV vaccine, addressing one of the leading causes of infant mortality worldwide. Her work integrates clinical research, epidemiology, and health policy, ensuring that vaccine development aligns with the needs of underserved populations.
