Kurt Widhalm

Professor Kurt Widhalm is an Emeritus Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Pediatrics at the Medical University of Vienna, specializing in obesity, lipid metabolism, and metabolic diseases. He has played a significant role in advancing research on nutritional medicine, pediatric health, and cardiovascular disease prevention, shaping clinical guidelines and public health strategies.

Widhalm has held leadership positions in several international organizations, including serving as President of the European Society of Pediatric Research (ESPR), the Congress of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, and the Federation of European Nutritional Societies. He is currently President of the Austrian Academy of Clinical Nutrition and a consultant for the Austrian Chambers of Physicians, contributing to policy development and medical education.

His research focuses on childhood obesity, lipid disorders, and metabolic diseases, examining the long-term health consequences of poor nutrition and lifestyle choices. He has contributed to studies on lipoprotein metabolism, early detection of metabolic disorders, and dietary interventions for obesity prevention. His work has helped refine nutritional guidelines for pediatric patients, ensuring that children receive appropriate dietary recommendations to support healthy growth and development.

Widhalm has published over 390 scientific papers in international journals and authored several books on clinical nutrition and pediatric health. His contributions to nutritional epidemiology and metabolic disease research have influenced healthcare policies across Europe, promoting evidence-based approaches to nutrition and disease prevention.

Beyond his research, Widhalm is actively involved in medical education and mentorship, training healthcare professionals in nutritional medicine, pediatric endocrinology, and metabolic disorders. He has been a board member of the Alpro Foundation since 2000, supporting research initiatives that promote plant-based nutrition and sustainable dietary practices.
