Dr. Máximo Vento is the Director of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe) in Valencia, Spain. He is a pediatric neonatologist and principal investigator of the Perinatology Research Group at IIS La Fe. His work focuses on neonatal medicine, prematurity, and perinatal health, contributing to advancements in the understanding and management of neonatal conditions.
Dr. Vento has held leadership roles in neonatal research and healthcare policy. Since November 2017, he has served as President of the European Board of Neonatology (EBN), an organization that brings together neonatal societies across Europe. He is also President of the Spanish Society of Neonatology (SENeo) and National Coordinator of the Retic Red de Salud Materno Infantil y del Desarrollo, a research network under the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Carlos III.
His research focuses on the causes and consequences of prematurity, integrating metabolomics, epigenetics, and genomics to improve neonatal care. He has published over 224 scientific articles in international journals and has an H-index of 43, with more than 7,257 citations. His contributions have helped shape neonatal care guidelines and improve outcomes for premature infants.
Dr. Vento leads a multidisciplinary research team of 24 clinical and basic science investigators, working on projects funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the European Union, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States, and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia. His work has been instrumental in advancing neonatal medicine through clinical trials, translational research, and international collaborations.
Beyond his research, Dr. Vento plays a key role in medical education, mentoring healthcare professionals and researchers in neonatology. His leadership in neonatal research continues to shape the field, improving care for newborns and advancing scientific knowledge in perinatal health.
