About

Claudia Stefanutti

Dr. Claudia Stefanutti is the Head of the Extracorporeal Therapeutic Techniques Unit at the Lipid Clinic and Atherosclerosis Prevention Centre, part of the Department of Molecular Medicine at Sapienza University of Rome. She specializes in atherosclerosis, lipid metabolism disorders, and extracorporeal therapeutic techniques, contributing to advancements in the treatment of rare metabolic diseases.

Dr. Stefanutti earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine (Atherosclerosis) from the University of Siena in 1988. She holds specializations in Liver and Metabolic Diseases (1986) and Emergency Surgery (1994) from Sapienza University of Rome. Her expertise in extracorporeal techniques was developed through training at the Department of Hematology, where she studied apheresis and blood purification methods.

She has played a key role in introducing autologous blood recovery techniques in surgical settings and has led multicenter studies on LDL-apheresis, focusing on its effectiveness in managing severe lipid disorders. In 2013, she founded the Multidisciplinary International Group for Hemapheresis Therapy and Metabolic Disturbances Contrast (MIGHTY MEDIC), an initiative aimed at advancing research and clinical applications of therapeutic apheresis.

Dr. Stefanutti has served as a European Board Trustee of the International Society for Apheresis (ISFA) and has been a full member of the European Atherosclerosis Society since 2015. She has contributed to international lipid research panels, shaping guidelines for the management of familial hypercholesterolemia and other metabolic disorders.

Her research includes studies on lipid-lowering therapies, cytokine modulation, and the role of extracorporeal techniques in cardiovascular disease prevention. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, providing insights into novel therapeutic approaches for lipid disorders.

Beyond her research, Dr. Stefanutti is actively involved in medical education, serving as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Health Sciences, and Applied Medical Biotechnologies at Sapienza University of Rome. She has been a Visiting Professor at the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Nis, Serbia, contributing to international collaborations in metabolic medicine.
