SARGSYAN, SERGEY

Sergey Sargsyan [Sarkissian] is a pediatrician, Associate Professor at the Department of Pediatrics of the Yerevan State Medical University; head of unit ‘Institute of Child and Adolescent Health’ at Arabkir Medical Centre; Vice-President of Armenian Pediatric association. He graduated from the Yerevan State Medical University with Diploma of Excellence in 1988. In 1990, he successfully completed the residency program on ‘General Pediatrics’. Since 1991, he started working for the hospital as a doctor-on-duty as well as for the Department of Pediatrics of University, as a junior researcher. Working for the University, he became Associate Professor in 1994 and Associate Professor in 2006. In 1996, he gained the medical sciences degree for dissertation on epidemiology of Familial Mediterranean fever in Armenian children. In the hospital, currently he provides consultancies in the Pediatric Centre for Familial Mediterranean fever (since 1998); in the Pulmonology Department (since 2007) as well as in out-patient unit. In 1994 he was invited by the Ministry of Health to run the National program for Acute respiratory infections in children (1994 – 1999) and Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (1999-2001); in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF. Since the early 2000s as a program director and / or senior expert he has participated in many other national programs in relation to child development, adolescent health, health policies and systems, health promotion, advocacy etc. In 2003, he was invited to run unit ‘Institute of Child and Adolescent Health’. Dr Sargsyan has collaborated with WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA , UNDP and many other international organizations since mid 90s. As an international consultant he has participated in different training, assessment, policy development projects in Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, China. He attended and provided presentations at many forums such as National Armenian Pediatric Conference, Armenian Medical Congress, European and International Pediatric Congresses, National Conference of American Academy of Pediatrics, European Public Health Congress, different WHO forums. In 2005, with few colleagues he initiated implementation of the HBSC study in Armenia and became its principal investigator. Since 2006 he has participated in activities of EuTEACH (European training in effective adolescent care and health), particularly in establishing the EuTEACH summer school branch in St.Petersburg, Russia.
