Dr. Hemmen Sabir is Head of Experimental Neonatology at the Department of Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care, University Hospital Bonn, Germany. A trained neonatologist with a background in neonatal neurology, Dr. Sabir’s clinical and research interests center on perinatal brain injury and the development of neuroprotective strategies for vulnerable newborns.
In his role at the University Hospital Bonn, Dr. Sabir leads a research team investigating the underlying mechanisms of brain injury in preterm and term infants. His work focuses on translational models of neonatal encephalopathy and hypoxic-ischemic injury, aiming to identify therapeutic interventions that could reduce long-term neurological impairment. His research includes preclinical studies on neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and the timing and effects of therapeutic hypothermia, as well as exploring novel adjunctive treatments.
Dr. Sabir has contributed to numerous publications in the fields of neonatology and pediatric neurology and is involved in collaborative research networks focused on improving outcomes for newborns affected by brain injury. In addition to his laboratory work, he engages in clinical care for neonates requiring intensive and neurological support, bridging experimental research with practical applications in neonatal medicine.
He also participates in the training of medical students and pediatric residents and contributes to academic programs that promote translational research in neonatal neuroprotection. Dr. Sabir’s work supports the ongoing development of evidence-based strategies to prevent or mitigate brain injury in the neonatal period.
