Prof. Andrew Riordan is a Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool, United Kingdom. He also holds an honorary academic appointment at the University of Liverpool, where he contributes to clinical teaching and research in pediatric infectious diseases.
Prof. Riordan has a particular interest in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of invasive bacterial infections, with a research focus on meningococcal disease. He was awarded the Johanne Holly Research Fellowship at the University of Liverpool, where he completed his doctoral thesis on meningococcal infection. His work has informed national clinical guidelines and public health strategies for the management of serious pediatric infections.
He has contributed to several national clinical guidance initiatives, including the development of NICE guidelines on the management of fever in children and NICE quality standards for the care of children with meningitis and meningococcal disease.
Prof. Riordan is a member of the UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), and he chaired the JCVI Meningococcal Sub-committee, supporting national immunisation policy through expert review and evidence synthesis. He also serves as an Associate Editor of Archives of Disease in Childhood, where he contributes to the peer review and editorial process for publications in pediatric medicine.
In addition to his clinical and advisory roles, he is involved in medical education and continues to support the development of best practices in pediatric infectious diseases through teaching, research, and professional engagement.
