Dr. Erin D. Maughan serves as the Director of Research for the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) in the United States, where she co-leads the development of a national uniform data set for school nurses and the identification of school nurse indicators. She also co-leads a grant from Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute (PCORI), which focuses on ensuring the voice of students and their families are included in student health services. Dr Maughan launched NASN’s cultural competency webpage, and co-led the creation of NASN’s first evidence-based clinical guidelines and a heuristic framework for school nursing practice. Dr. Maughan earned her Baccalaureate degree in nursing from Brigham Young University (BYU) and her Masters and PhD in nursing from the University of Utah. She is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Executive Nurse Fellow (ENF) 2013 cohort. Her individual RWJF ENF project focuses on increasing the understanding of the role of the school nurse and bringing school health partners together to collaborate on student health. Prior to joining NASN, Dr. Maughan was faculty in the College of Nursing at BYU, where she led the public health/community nursing concentration, served as the Coordinator of International Affairs for the College’s global health nursing course and study abroad programs, and published several frequently cited studies on school nurse workforce. Dr. Maughan also served as Chair of the Utah County Board of Health and on the Board of Centro Hispano, a non-profit advocacy group. Prior to BYU, Dr. Maughan worked for the Utah Department of Health where she initiated the health component for the statewide migrant education program, created a school nurse orientation, and co-developed the smallpox vaccination initiative. Dr. Maughan also worked as a school nurse where she developed the health component for the district’s migrant education program. Dr. Maughan is passionate about addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and improving children’s health around the world.
