Dr. Ilan Koppen is a Pediatric Fellow in Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases at Emma Kinderziekenhuis, Amsterdam UMC, specializing in pediatric gastroenterology with a particular focus on childhood constipation. Since joining Amsterdam UMC in 2014, he has worked as a physician-researcher, pediatrician in training, and now as a pediatric fellow, contributing to advancements in diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders in children.
Dr. Koppen’s research explores functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders, particularly functional constipation, which significantly impacts children's quality of life. His work integrates epidemiological studies, pathophysiological investigations, and novel therapeutic approaches, including sacral nerve stimulation and surgical treatments. He has contributed to multicenter studies on colonic dysmotility, aiming to refine predictive models for treatment outcomes.
Beyond his clinical and research work, Dr. Koppen has been recognized for his contributions to pediatric gastroenterology, receiving the 2019 IFFGD Research Award for Pediatric Investigator in Clinical, Basic, and Translational Science. His studies have helped shape best practices in pediatric motility disorders, improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies.
Dr. Koppen is also involved in digital health solutions, exploring ways to support children and their families in outpatient settings through telemedicine and digital interventions. His work aligns with global efforts to enhance pediatric digestive health, ensuring that children receive personalized and effective care.
