Dr. Amel Karaa, MD, is a Board-certified internist and medical geneticist, specializing in mitochondrial and lysosomal storage disorders. She is the Director of the Mitochondrial Disease Program and the Lysosomal Disorders Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she provides clinical care and therapeutic opportunities for patients with complex metabolic conditions.
Dr. Karaa has established a specialized program evaluating hundreds of national and international patients, ensuring that individuals with rare metabolic disorders receive evidence-based treatment. She is a 2013 United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) fellow and serves as a site investigator for the NIH North American Mitochondrial Disease Consortium (NAMDC), contributing to clinical research on mitochondrial diseases.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Karaa is actively involved in scientific and medical advisory boards, including the UMDF, MitoAction, and multiple medical boards for lysosomal storage disorders. In June 2018, she was elected President of the Mitochondrial Medicine Society (MMS), where she advocates for advancements in mitochondrial disease research and patient care.
