Professor Marko Kalliomäki, MD, PhD, is a leading expert in pediatric gastroenterology, serving as Chief Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Turku University Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Turku, Finland. His research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders, and probiotics, refining diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for pediatric digestive health.
Prof. Kalliomäki earned his medical degree from the University of Turku in 1995, followed by a doctoral thesis in 2001 and a specialist degree in pediatrics in 2005. He qualified as a pediatric gastroenterologist in 2009, ensuring that children with complex gastrointestinal conditions receive specialized care. His postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School (2003-2004) in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition provided him with international expertise in digestive health research.
He has published over 75 scientific papers, contributing to global discussions on pediatric gastroenterology and probiotics. His h-index of 25 reflects his impact on clinical research and medical advancements. His work explores how gut microbiota influences immune responses, shaping best practices in pediatric digestive health.
Beyond his research, Prof. Kalliomäki is actively involved in medical education and mentorship, training healthcare professionals in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition.
