Professor Koen Huysentruyt, MD, PhD, is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (UZ Brussel), Belgium, specializing in pediatric nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and hepatology. He is recognized for his expertise in disease-related undernutrition, intestinal failure, and metabolic disorders in children.

Prof. Huysentruyt earned his medical degree from the University of Hasselt and KU Leuven, followed by specialization in pediatrics at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He pursued further training in pediatric gastroenterology at UZ Brussel, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada. His research focuses on nutritional interventions for hospitalized children, leading to his PhD in 2016 on disease-related undernutrition.

In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Huysentruyt is actively involved in medical research and education, contributing to international guidelines on pediatric nutrition and gastroenterology. He co-founded the Brussels Centre for Intestinal Rehabilitation in Children (B-CIRC) in 2022, advancing treatment strategies for children with intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome. His expertise extends to home total parenteral nutrition (home-TPN) for pediatric patients, ensuring that children with severe gastrointestinal conditions receive specialized care.

Beyond his clinical and research contributions, Prof. Huysentruyt is a board member of the Belgian Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (VVKVM) and an expert for the Belgian High Health Council, shaping national policies on pediatric nutrition and metabolic disorders. He has published over 35 peer-reviewed studies, presenting his findings at national and international conferences.
