Wolfgang Hogler

Professor Wolfgang Högler is a leading expert in pediatric endocrinology and osteology, serving as Chair of Paediatrics at Johannes Kepler University and Chief of Paediatrics at Kepler University Hospital in Linz, Austria. His research focuses on the pathophysiology and management of bone and growth disorders, including osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatasia, rickets, short stature, and disorders of vitamin D and growth hormone/IGF-1 metabolism2.

Prof. Högler has developed a bed-to-benchside approach to studying rare bone disorders, integrating clinical practice with translational research to refine diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. His work has contributed to global consensus guidelines for the treatment of rickets, ensuring that children with metabolic bone diseases receive evidence-based care.

He maintains strong research collaborations with the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research at the University of Birmingham, where he supervises PhD students and contributes to international studies on pediatric endocrinology. His academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions, including Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he previously led the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, transforming it into the largest pediatric endocrinology unit in the UK.

Beyond his research, Prof. Högler is actively involved in medical education and mentorship, training healthcare professionals in pediatric endocrinology and metabolic bone disease management. He is a committee member of international professional societies, including the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), and the International Society of Children’s Bone Health (ISCBH).
