Ruth Farrugia

Dr. Ruth Farrugia is a Consultant Paediatrician and Clinical Lead at the Paediatric Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital in Malta. She specializes in paediatric infectious diseases in emergency settings, with a particular focus on COVID-19, evidence-based management of common paediatric emergencies, and medical education.

Dr. Farrugia graduated from the University of Malta in 1999, where she currently holds a Visiting Senior Lecturer position. She was awarded membership in the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) in 2005 and later obtained a Master of Science in Paediatric Emergency Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 2017. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked extensively in the management of newborns, acutely ill children, chronic childhood conditions, and routine childhood immunizations.

Her research and clinical interests focus on paediatric infectious diseases, particularly in the emergency setting, where timely intervention is crucial. She has contributed to guidelines for managing pediatric emergencies, ensuring that healthcare professionals follow evidence-based protocols to improve patient outcomes. Her expertise in COVID-19 management in children has been instrumental in refining hospital protocols and treatment strategies during the pandemic.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Farrugia is actively involved in paediatric education and training, mentoring young doctors and healthcare professionals in emergency medicine and infectious disease management. She participates in international conferences and expert panels, sharing insights on best practices in paediatric emergency care.
