Dr. Gijs Elshout is a General Practitioner, Researcher, and Lecturer at Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, Netherlands, specializing in pediatric primary care, febrile illnesses, and allergic conditions in children. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Practice, where he leads research initiatives and medical education programs.
Dr. Elshout earned his PhD in 2015, focusing on febrile children in primary care, refining diagnostic and treatment strategies for pediatric fever management. His research has contributed to clinical guidelines for Dutch General Practitioners, ensuring that evidence-based protocols are implemented in primary care settings. He has delivered numerous lectures on pediatric fever, shaping best practices in pediatric healthcare.
Beyond his work on febrile illnesses, Dr. Elshout serves as a project leader in research on various pediatric primary care topics, including allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. His studies explore early intervention strategies for childhood allergies, ensuring that children receive timely and effective treatment. His research integrates cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and cross-sectional analyses, refining clinical approaches to pediatric allergy management.
Dr. Elshout is also Head of Student Education in the Department of General Practice, where he mentors medical students and junior researchers, ensuring that future healthcare professionals receive specialized training in pediatric primary care. His dedication to medical education and research has earned him recognition, including the MORE Education Award for Best Lecturer at Erasmus MC.
Despite his academic and research commitments, Dr. Elshout continues to practice as a General Practitioner in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, ensuring that his clinical expertise remains grounded in real-world patient care.
