Erik Eklund

Dr. Erik A. Eklund,MD, PhD, is a Consultant Pediatric Neurologist at Skåne University Hospital inLund, Sweden. He serves as Head of the Section for Pediatric Neurology,Pulmonology, and Metabolism, and is the Lead for the National Highly SpecializedCare (NHV) Unit for Neurometabolic and Metabolic Disorders in Southern Sweden. Dr. Eklund is also an Associate Professor of Experimental Pediatrics at LundUniversity.

With a broadresearch portfolio, Dr. Eklund focuses on neurometabolic disorders—including metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) and mitochondrial diseases—neurogenetic conditions with an emphasis on congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs), epileptic encephalopathies, and neuromuscular disorders. He has authored morethan 80 peer-reviewed publications across a wide range of scientific journals.

Dr. Eklund plays acentral role in the Metachromatic Leukodystrophy initiative (MLDi), contributing both as a clinical expert and as a researcher. He serves as Lead for the qualified treatment center (QTC) for gene therapy in MLD based in Lund, which provides care for all Nordic countries. He has also contributed substantially to the groundwork supporting the proposed inclusion of MLD in Sweden’s national newborn screening program, targeted for rollout in Q3 2026.

Holding a PhD in Cell Biology, Dr. Eklund brings the unique ability to integrate deep molecular and cellular expertise with compassionate, hands-on clinical care—an uncommon combination that shapes both his scientific and clinical leadership
