Professor Imti Choonara, MD, DrHC, is a renowned paediatric clinical pharmacologist, serving as Emeritus Professor in Child Health at the University of Nottingham. He has played a pivotal role in establishing paediatric clinical pharmacology as an accredited subspecialty in the UK, ensuring that children receive safer and more effective medication treatments.
Prof. Choonara has dedicated his career to researching drug toxicity, clinical trials, and the epidemiology of medicine use in children, refining guidelines for paediatric pharmacology. His work explores inequalities in child health and access to medicines, advocating for equitable healthcare policies. He has contributed to global discussions on paediatric drug safety, shaping best practices in paediatric pharmacology.
Beyond his research, Prof. Choonara is actively involved in academic publishing, serving as Deputy Editor for Archives of Disease in Childhood, where he oversees the Drug Therapy section. He is also an Academic Editor for PLoS ONE, ensuring that paediatric pharmacology research maintains high academic standards. His contributions to peer-reviewed publications have helped refine clinical approaches to paediatric medication safety.
Prof. Choonara is passionate about international child health, organizing an annual workshop on child health in Cuba, where he collaborates with global healthcare professionals to improve paediatric medical education and policy. Despite his recent retirement, he remains active in research and postgraduate supervision, mentoring future paediatric pharmacologists.
