Active Healthy Families

Campaigning for Increased Physical Activity and Healthy Life Style for the Family not just the Child

EIP aims to increase awareness among healthcare professionals and persuade them to put physical inactivity / physical activity at the top of their minds during their day-to-day practice. Over the past 4 years we have, and are continuing to:

  1. Offer to healthcare professionals the skills and the training needed for them to become the trusted advisor on physical activity and energy balance to the families they serve, broadening their interventions from the child-only level to include the adults of every family
  2. Equip healthcare professionals with modern and sophisticated tools and programs that will help to increase physical activity for the whole family, allowing them to monitor the results and adjust their interventions
  3. Build networks of healthcare professionals who will advocate for physical activity to families allowing them to share and exchange best practices and experiences
  4. Motivate medical communities to engage in fighting physical inactivity irrespective of their specialty since physical activity carries benefits at so many levels including the non-communal conditions
  5. Align the efforts being made by physical activity and energy balance organisations, associations and networks, both governmental and non-governmental, to multiply efficiency and outreach

What we have done so far

To fill the educational gap between pediatricians and parents, to help both these groups transfer the active healthy living knowledge to children, EiP worked at several levels.

  • First, we identified the unmet educational needs and produced updated materials for the education of pediatric healthcare practitioners. These materials had to contain both evidence-based clinical updates and updated guidance on how to advise parents on active healthy living. The content development process included key steps such as surveys, expert interviews, and national mappings to identify the knowledge gaps, and then an expert-level multi-disciplinary approach to develop content that could effectively address these gaps.
  • At the second level, EiP formed strategic alliances with healthcare organizations globally, to raise awareness about active healthy living and distribute new educational materials to these early adopter organisations. These strategic alliances are also important for facilitating access to national policymakers and for gaining wider recognition among key international expert bodies whose endorsement can greatly facilitate the outreach and uptake of new educational materials.
  • At the third level, EiP adopted modern and sophisticated communication tools, such as E-Learnings and mobile applications, to deliver educational materials on a large scale. Using the right technology allows for direct communications to large numbers of healthcare professionals at the time most convenient for them, which EiP has found to be particularly important for the effective education of general pediatricians.
  • At the fourth and last level, EiP is advising governments on more effective policies that could halt and reverse the global obesity and sedentary trends. The Active Healthy Living Summits of 2013 and 2014 and the Active Healthy Families Meeting in 2015 have provided a platform and structure for delegations from participating countries to share their successes and challenges and adapt and adopt from those of others as part of an iterative learning approach. EIP Plans to build on this work further in 2017/18 with a Focus Group of Active Healthy Families taking place in Vienna, Austria

Training Materials for Educators - Program Recourses

EIP can report that 5,715 pediatric healthcare professionals have been educated in evidence-based approaches to promoting active healthy living by 4 new E-Learnings and over 15,588 EiP website visits to fill their previous knowledge gaps. The gaps were identified in 856 individual survey responses and national mapping questionnaires from experts in 16 countries, and were effectively addressed as reflected by the high proportion of 'excellent' course feedback results, with averages of 4.2 / 5.0 for the E-Learnings.
